Hey!
I hope you are all well. Before I had dreadlocks my hair was many different colors, my absolute favorite being purple. But most dyes have residue which is very bad for dreads!
I bought indigo, it should get here today, I’m very excited to try it!
I’m going to do a strip test of indigo with the Budlight Ice that is recommended elsewhere on this forum, and one with vodka.
since there aren’t any dreadlock posts here, I thought I’d start one!
my dreads are 2 1/2 years old, I’m doing the natural way which means no crochet or extensions, just clean hair without brushing. this method is recommended by Soaring Eagle over at dreadlocksite. I wash my hair the same amount I always have, 3-4 times a week with a natural shampoo.

Wow that is amazing and thank you! If you do try the vodka, go easy on it or maybe even mix some with bud-ice or water and really mix it. I would not do straight vodka, too much alcohol and it can dry out your hair. When you are mixing it with bud ice the indigo will really absorb it, so take your time and keep adding a little more or it will be to dry. Do not forget it will turn blue at first when you rinse it out! Then over-night it will become purple, would love to see the during, and after, even the blue if it turns blue (not everyone gets blue and tends to turn blue on lighter colored hair). Also on the after pictures, purple is very hard to see on a camera, so if you can take it in the sun, or with really good lighting that would be great!
and when you post them I will send you out some free product! :) Hope you don't mind I flipped your pic over :)
Thanks for flipping my picture! It wouldn’t allow me to!
I’ll take some good pictures of the whole process.
thanks for the tips and advice, I appreciate it. The science behind indigo seems fascinating!
I cannot make my pictures go upright. I cannot edit it to fix it. So I’m all sideways.
It is OK, lol it happens sometimes! I use Irfanview, it is a free program for PC that you can edit photos with. I have used it for well over 10 years.
I’m simply posting online using my mobile phone, the photo uploads correctly and then flips sideways.
My test lock is a mild green. Not displeasing, but certainly not purple. I know my texture was too watery so I will add more indigo, less beer next time.
It will turn purple, that is very normal. Some get blue, some get green after it is rinsed, then it will turn purple.
I decided to do the whole package of indigo mixed into thick pudding with bud light ice.
It started turning purple about 30 minutes after I had finished putting it in.
14 hours after rinse out it’s definitely darker! The lock on the top back of my head was not dyed with indigo, that’s why it’s lighter.
Do not forget to shampoo it ;)
I plan on shampooing at 36 hours!
I have been waiting to get a picture in the sunshine but it hasn’t happened yet! I love my hair color, it’s not purple but rather has green and blue highlights, similar to jean colors in the right lighting, otherwise it’s a pleasant darker brown. The indigo has strengthened and conditioned my hair nicely without leaving a weird residue that builds up inside my dreadlocks. I will definitely be using indigo and henna in preference of other products in the future!
Could I please get a DEEP RED color pack as my free product for posting pictures on the forum? I’d like to layer It over the indigo for the cherry/bright red look. I love funky colors.
thanks!
You can rinse it with beer and that will make it more purple. Do you put any other products in your hair? Also make sure you do not use baby shampoo.
I’ll try the beer again!
I use a natural residue free shampoo, no other products. And never “baby” shampoo!
I am trying to look you up to send you a deep red, but all I see is the last order from 2016 which was the shampoo ( we finally got more in FYI). Sorry I missed that in the post. Do you have your last order number? should be in your emails, starts with H. Also did you hair turn purple? It should have. I've tested that technique numerous times on me and other people and it has always worked.
H105135 is my order number
it didn’t turn purple! I have no idea why. unless our treated water threw off the ph levels.
Just did a friend of mines hair Had to really get it in the sun to see it as her hair is darker. Lighter hair is much more visible in any light.
