Hi Julie great photos! Is your natural color dark brown? If it is then it will be hard to lighten naturally. If that is from using the hair dye, then the only way to lighten it would be to follow these directions: Lighten Henna Hair Color Naturally | Harvest Moon
A customer actually told me about it and it worked for her, she has been a customer for over 8 years and her hair was very dark prior.
Then I would switch a light brown and just focus on the roots as they come in. Browns and medium browns, dark browns and mahogany will get darker if you do your entire hair over and over, so use an application brush to focus on the roots and do the entire head as it fades.
I also did have another customer tell me she has only done her roots since 2014 using a method I had never heard of, this is what she said and does:
Awesome product- I’ve been using this henna on my hair since 2014. Very high quality and easy to use. I have dark brown hair- I mix burgundy and mahogany and the color is gorgeous and I only have to do my roots, once a month. Nobody believes that it’s henna.
This is my prep:
-boil water and shut off before shower
-mix powders
-wash hair 2x w/shampoo
-wash with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and let sit for 3 min, rinse out
-mix hot water with powders
-use application brush from https://hennahut.com to apply and let sit for 1 hour
-rinse till clear
-I do not wash my hair for 2 days after. This helps the darker pigment set and my natural hair oils to further recoup.
’This week, I’m about to do the “lemon/baking soda 2-day Method” Rod suggested - to try to go from VERY dark burgundy which i’ve done for years (my natural hair color is white so roots come in white) to try to go to Blonde. I’m really nervous. Will do the skin test with blonde henna today and if that goes well, the rest of the process will occur later this week. I’ll post ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures.
Oh good!! Please do share. I am going on vacation for 10 days and when I return I plan to try it. I can't wait to hear how it works for you? My hair in naturally medium brown - however now it is 1/2 gray. I am getting too dark for my age because I use the Wine Red mixed with brown... and my natural brown gets black and my gray turns red... I just want to be light brown or red... I don't know what color to go with once I strip this current henna out. maybe the light brown ?
Make sure you just touch up the roots as needed, doing your entire head over and over will make the darker areas turn darker. We sell application brushes or you can get them at local beauty supplies/local drug stores and use it to touch up roots as needed. Then when entire head fades do it all. However the method Vanessa is doing, she is not fading, this is incredible and her hair is gorgeous! And never determine you are to old for darker colored hair, this had nothing to do with skin tone either, it is a determination of facial features and wrinkles (hate to put that out there) my mom is 73 and her hair is almost black from using mahogany all over application each time and she looks incredible. I have a pic I will post of her, but it is on my phone and have to find it. Found it!
3 years before this photo her hair was not past her ears and could not grow it out, bald spots, breakage, split ends! This was because she has bleached her hair blond for so many years it had done a toll. She looked 100 years old! Her hair had literally stopped growing! Once she got on Harvest Moon Mahogany, it took about 2 years for her live hair to grow back out completely and for the first time in over 10 years it went past her shoulders, 3 years later full and gorgeous! No more brittle hair, minimum split ends, no more breakage! These are not extensions and in fact her real hair. She begged me not to put her old pic on the site, but might put it on for a little while. The transformation is dramatic! And the beautician that has done her hair for years is shocked.
Rod, your Mom looks great in the mahogany henna. I'm in the middle of doing my skin test for the blonde henna in the hopes of preparing for the 2-day dark henna stripping process, so that on Thursday this week, I'll be going to my salon hopefully with the blonde henna for a haircut and dye jjob. I'm getting really nervous, but as promised, I'll publish 'before' and 'after' pictures this week after the process is completed. When you see my "before" pictures, you'll understand why I've decided to go light - and short.
@Julie DenBeste I am not sure what you mean by what you mean, lol You can do it yourself or have someone else do it. My mother went to the same salon for a very long time and then she started doing the henna at the same salon.
@Julie DenBeste , I lbring my henna to my salon as I have 14 screws and a plate in my left upper arm and so I do not have the mobility in my left arm to do my own henna, and also she cuts my hair. But now that it's super short, I'll probably be able to do it myself.
Rod, when I begin the lemon/baking soda method of stripping the henna hair dye, I would assume that I START with freshly shampooed hair. Is that correct?
Rod, The last time I shampooed my hair was 5 days ago with Shikapoo. Could I shampoo with Shikapoo again now before starting the baking soda regimen? I hope you are able to answer this question soon as I tried calling but it is after hours. Thanks.
Well, I tried the baking soda/lemon method to remove henna from my hair in the hopes of using blonde henna. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. It only (very) slightly lightened my hair. (
Here's my hair today after trying to lighten it! :-(
See attached photo) My natural color is white but I've used the merlot burgundy henna for about nine years now. So, today I had my hair cut super short and will wait about a month to cut it again and then go with the blonde henna when my natural (white) roots are the only color left to work with.
It has worked on about 60/40 of the people that have done it. Some hair is just more absorbent than others and holds the color more. You do look good with dark hair :) but I am more partial to brunettes, lol.
@hennahairdye Rod, I like that idea - a reverse hombre - but I was thinking about doing the roots BLONDE henna instead of ash as I like the blonde better than the ash shade. The only reason I didn't do the roots today is that there was not enough of the white hair growth to make much of a difference at this point (only about 1/4 in. since my last merlot burgundy henna application 3 weeks ago.). In 4 weeks, I plan to do the blonde henna on whatever new hair growth I have at that point.

Thank you.. I will try the lemons!!

Here is my mom about 3 years before her hair took the worst toll, she was fluffing it to hide the balding spots.

what do you mean dye job?? Don't you do it yourself.. put the new henna in? What dye?

I would think that is fine as long as it is oil free. But as long as you have shampooed with in 24 hours should be fine.

You can also do a reverse hombre, just start coloring the roots ash as they grow in.
